“And at a deadly pace, it came from outer space!” – Science Fiction Double Feature, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
In 1977, the cinematic skies were watched in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Five years later, in 1982, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial phoned home. The War of the Worlds was fought in 2005. Now, in 2026, it’s Disclosure Day, another science fiction odyssey directed by Steven Spielberg.
Not all science fiction movies, even if they include aliens, have to fit the straight science fiction mold. There are some extraordinary science fiction features that mix and match genres. Alien (1979) is also a great haunted house movie, and District 9 (2009) is a political thriller, in addition to being a science fiction motion picture. Disclosure Day cresses it’s science fiction story, with that of an espionage thriller. That’s great for me, because espionage films are some of my favorites!
There are no nods to conspiracy theory filled history of extraterrestrial life on earth, the film jumped straight into its spy like storyline, with its whistleblower grabbing their information. Those conspiracy theory nods are sprinkled throughout as Easter eggs, which is the way it should be. Disclosure Day balances the science fiction and the whistleblowing, espionage storyline equally throughout its near two and a half hour runtime.
Considering there was no fluff to start the film, I was surprised at the length of the movie. As the movie progressed, I realized the film was having to pause every so often to explain certain concepts. This slowed the film down, from time to time, but it would pick back up.
Though Disclosure Day is about aliens, there is a lot of the human journey in this film. That’s the kind of science fiction movie o truly love. Combine that with the espionage parts of the story Disclosure Day had a lot of aspects I liked.
This was a science fiction movie that shared it story with the espionage genre. It was exciting to watch, even with its paused yi explain the concepts it was trying to achieve.
Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
