STORYLINE: When fresh-faced Elliot (Hoffman) lands an exciting job for renowned artist, icon and provocateur Erika Tracy (Wilde), his fantasies come true as Erika taps him to become her sexual muse. But Elliot soon finds himself out of his depth as Erika takes him on a journey more profound than he ever could have imagined, into a world of sex, obsession, power, betrayal and murder. (Imdb).
Let’s talk about sex, shall we? Don’t worry, this will not be a perverted blog entry. The subject sells, and has been the heart beat of some uncomfortable, yet incredible, and/or interesting, motion pictures. In 2011, a film titled, A Dangerous Method, about the Freudian therapy method being developed, was released. Bound (1996) is a staple of both LGBTQ cinema and the ganster genre. In 1989, Steven Soderberg launched his career with the highly regarded feature Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Even The Invite, from earlier this year, is a socially awkward comedy that audiences are thoroughly enjoying. Now, I Want Your Sex, is in cinemas.
There is a stigma around films that are heavily sex themed. This is in large part thanks to films like Babygirl (2023) and The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. None of those films are good, and I can not recommend them. The problem is they give the films that are good, like the ones sighted, a bad reputation.
I Want Your Sex is filled with the contemporary style-sexual
segments that plagues contemporary films. It lends itself to being over the top, and if you find it grotesque, then it is just that.
The merits of the film lie the murder mystery. From the opening of the film, audiences know the victim, thanks to a Sunset Boulevard (1950) homage, and the prime suspect. The film is told in flashback, as a police interrogation. This style of story structure, is one I am a fan.
The mystery tries to have its twists abd turns, but ultimately fails. It takes a back seat to the sexual content.
Is it worth pointing out that The Invite, was directed by, abd starred Olivia Wilde? She also was the lead in I Want Your Sex. Not sure, but it’s the kind of fact, I enjoy.
I Want Your Sex is an erotic thriller, where the murder mystery falls short of its twists and turns.
Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
