CLAYFACE (2026)

STORYLINE: Rising Hollywood star Matt Hagen descends into a horrifying revenge-filled monster when scientific ambition strips him of his identity and humanity.  (IMDb)

Joaquin Phoenix first portrayed the Joker, in the 2019’s Oscar winning feature Joker.  Cinema goers of all ages, were treated to a dastardly good time, watching the villainess animated feature Megamind (2010).  American Psycho (2000) is a horrifying tale, inside the mind of a killer.   Clayface, is the latest DC theatrical feature, is a motion picture about a Batman baddie, told from the perspective of the villain.

Every hero needs a villain, to face off against.  The more menacing the baddie, the better the super hero movie.  Clayface does battle against the Caped Crusader. Though, Batman does not make an appearance, in this tale from Gotham City.

The film thrusts its audiences quickly into its cookie cutter, superhero villain setup.    From their, it takes a turn into a slow, dulll soap opera like medical procedural.  It takes until the third act, to become, what finally feels like a comic book villain movie.  There is a whole lot of setup, for very little pay off.

There science in the movie is hokey.  Yes, I know  it’s a comic book movie.  The problem is the movie goes for a dark tone.  A hokey, almost playful science off sets that.

The comic book, third act that eventually arrives, underwhelms.  Though Clayface is a movie about a bad guy, the third act still features the classic good vs evil structure. It fails to deliver the moment of triumph, who is striving to achieve.

When it boils down to it, Clayface is a comic book villain origin story motion picture that falls short.

Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
