2026 HOLIDAY RETROSPECTIVE – THE INNOCENTS (1961)

STORYLINE:  In Victorian England, the uncle (Sir Michael Redgrave) of orphaned niece Flora (Pamela Franklin) and nephew Miles (Martin Stephens) hires Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr) as governess to raise the children at his estate with total independence and authority. Soon after her arrival, Miss Giddens comes to believe that the spirits of the former governess Miss Jessel (Clytie Jessop) and valet Peter Quint (Peter Wyngarde) are possessing the children. Miss Giddens decides to help the children to face and exorcise the spirits.  (IMDb)

The holidays are rapidity approaching. It’s no secret that I a, not a fan, in fact I despise the holidays. Part of it is, for me, folks gather that I don’t communicate with, and who don’t communicate with me throughout the year.  At best, it seems, the interactions are socially awkward. The irony is I, genuinely, love holiday movies.

Halloween is just around about here, and it’s the one holiday I tolerate.  I enjoy spooky cinema.  When the 1961 horror classic, The Innocents, played, on the big screen, I eagerly got a ticket to the showing.

Haunted house movies are my favorite type of horror films.  That was the appeal of watching The Innocents.  The movie had what I loved from a haunted house feature.  There was the creepy lurks around the corners, a spooky paranormal mystery,  and a menacing or character two.  All this creates a formula for a fun fright fest.

As I often tend to do, I enjoyed seeing this classic on the big screen.  There’s always a difference between watching my dvd, at home for an audience of one, and seeing a movie on the bug screen with a crowd. Every one, myself included, seemed into the film.  On the way out, folks were talking about their favorite moments, and a fright or two.

In early 2020, I went to see the remake, The Turning.  I need to revisit this motion picture, but am not sure I can/will.  There are a handful of films from that time, in the same basket. I saw them just before the Covid shut down, and have a mental road block on that time.

None the less, The Innocents was a great time, in the theaters.

Until next time, I will see what the movie!
