STEAL THIS STORY, PLEASE (2025: documentary)

STORYLINE: Undeterred by armed soldiers, smooth-talking politicians, and riot police, journalist Amy Goodman has reported some of the most consequential stories of our time. Steal This Story, Please. is a gripping portrait of the trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to truth-telling spans three decades of turbulent history. From the front lines of global conflicts to the organized chaos of her daily news show Democracy Now!, Goodman broadcasts stories and voices routinely silenced by commercial media. Oscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin (Trouble the Water, The Janes) take us behind the scenes with the warm, wisecracking granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi – raised in a tradition of asking hard questions – as she navigates a news landscape reshaped by technology, corporate consolidation, and political assaults on truth itself. Urgent, provocative and unexpectedly funny, Steal This Story, Please. is both a call to action and a celebration of resistance, posing the question: what happens to democracy when the press surrenders to power?     Journalism is an important part of society. It gets the events of society to the public.  Biopics such as Spotlight (2015) and The Post (2017) put journalism front and center.  Even fiction films, such as 2014’s Nightcrawler, cover the topic.  Steal This Story, Please is a documentary about journalist Amy Goodman.

A documentary about an individual, especially one who is still living, have a tendency to be one sided.  Janis Ian: Breaking Silence (2025) is an exception tp that.  However, Steal This Story, Please is not an exception.  The film is a one sided perspective of Amy Goodman, and

political journalism work.

With that said, Steal This Story, Please features moments that dive into ger personal life, outside of the journalism. It was these personal moments that make elevate the movie just slightly above being a fluff piece.   They add a bit of intrigue to the film.

Obviously, the documentary is features a fair amount of politics.  I do not disagree with the political points featured, but by the Rud of the movie I grew weary of the topic.

Steal This Story, Please is a fluff piece on journalist Amy Goodman.

Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
