    Once upon a time, a wardrobe opened to a world known as Narnia in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (2005).  In 1984, The Neverending Story was told.  The search for The Dark Crystal, happened in 1982.  The Magical Faraway Tree, has become the latest fantasy feature, that is fun for the whole family, to make its way to the big screen!

    Fantasy films create many worlds for viewers to escape into. There’s everything from the halls of Hogwarts to the realms of middle earth, with everything in between.  The Magic Faraway Tree, has many different fantasy lands, built into its story.  

    The Magic Faraway Tree has a general setup similar to the first Narnia feature. A family is relocated, a member of that family stumbles on the fantasy realm, others in the family don’t believe about it, and then discover the fantasy realm.  

    Both the real world and the fantasy realm have their own distinct visual style.  Within the fantasy realm, there are multiple worlds explored, each with its own distinct visual style as well.  It’s a visual feast to watch. 

    The film had a playful spirit to it.  After all, it is a children’s movie.  That design is to hold the attention of the younger, target audience. 

    There are multiple family, friendly features I enjoyed of years.  The Harry Potter and Narnia movies, are some prime examples.  

   These films treat their young viewers with dignity. They  don’t condescend to a developing mind.  I have made this poin before. 

   The Magic Faraway Tree goes for the entertainment value, without developing a story. In taking the approach it finds itself into the ladder category.  The potential was there, the follow through wasn’t. 

     In the end, The Magic Faraway Tree is a light weight version of The Chroniclers of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.
