STORYLINE: Three friends go on a spa weekend that descends into chaos when their trainwreck friend joins, leading to hilarious consequences. (IMDb)
Wedding bells were ringing, in the 2011 comedy Bridesmaids. Tiffany Haddish, Queen Latifa, and Regina King took a Girls Trip, in 2017. Booksmart (2019) showed that the ladies of high school could have as much fun as their adult counterparts. Spa Weekend is the latest comedy, that features women can have has much fun as the guys.
With movies like The Hangover (2009) and National Lampoon’s Animal House (1974) the comedy patty genre has a history of been male driven. Over the past decade and a half the genre is becoming more balanced, with releases like Spa Weekend.
These movies often feature multiple women, sharing lead roles. They are all ensemble features. Some, like Bridesmaids and Booksmart espically, are smartly written. They all tend to make money, otherwise there where would not be a new feature every few years.
The problem is these films are cookie cutter. The story tends to be the same. The majority of the jokes are the same across the films, as well. Spa Weekend falls in line, with this model.
Party films have never been my favorite, but I have never disliked them either. I sat down to watch Spa Weekend, with that knowledge. There were jokes throughout the movie, where I laughed. I had laughed at these jokes in other features before though. Spa Weekend, does nothing new for the party comedy genre.
Spa Weekend is a cookie cutter party comedy, with a women led ensemble.
Until next time, I will see you at the movies!
